Today is the start of Penang’s 3-day celebrations over its capital city, Georgetown inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. Colorful banners and streamers can be seen at famous heritage areas in Penang to celebrate Georgetown’s inclusion into the UNESCO list. Tourists can see a huge banner being displaced outside the famous Cheah Kongsi clan house in Chulia Street to congratulate the new status of Georgetown. Travelers to Penang are encouraged to visit Cheah Kongsi tonight to witness the incredible lion dance show and take advantage of a specially arranged guided tour of Cheah Kongsi. Visitors can also explore the incredible wooden houses at the many clan jetties. Tourists can also join in the walkabout themed ‘Street of Harmony’ starting from City Hall to the Church of The Assumption, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Teochew Temple, Masjid Kapitan Keling and Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh. You can also take a stroll along the first four streets mapped out in Georgetown which include Beach Street, Chulia Street, Light Street and Pitt Street (now known as Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling) or take a walk along the famous heritage trails in Penang.
